Logline

Out of the culture of the 1990s Pacific Northwest independent music scene, riot grrrl established third-wave feminism and brought “girl power” to the masses, proving that music can change the world.

The Story

Riot grrrl is the name of the female-led, feminist and musical movement that propelled third wave feminism into the mainstream. GRRRL explores riot grrrl from its initial spark in 1991 to modern manifestations, touching upon mass media co-option and cultural impact. Riot grrrl demonstrates the strength of music as a vehicle for social change. GRRRL offers an alternative to the mass media riot grrrl narrative of white middle-class college-educated exclusivity. GRRRL unfolds the history, global impact and evolution of modern feminism revealing the complexity of identities and experiences within the riot grrrl community of the past and present. This is the story of how grrrls changed the world.
